The Director of Agronomy directly supervises and implements sound agronomic programs in accordance with established standards while working within the fiscal parameters of the facility.

JOB OVERVIEW:  The Director of Agronomy is entrusted with the maintenance, operations and management of a golf course and will carefully manage the maintenance inputs to the golf course while conserving and protecting natural resources. They directly influence the playing areas and landscapes with which golfers interact.

REPORTS TO: Director of Golf

 ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Managing and maintaining golf course properties, which may include:

o    The golf course(s)

o    Maintenance equipment

o    Clubhouse grounds and landscaping

o    Open spaces, wooded areas, unused acreage and areas outside the perimeter fence

o    Nurseries

o    Other properties as specified in writing by the Director of Agronomy's manager

  • Supervising the construction and maintenance of the golf course(s).

  • Supervising the maintenance and repair of construction and golf course maintenance equipment.

  • Rendering professional advice, opinions, assistance and services to the facility's General Manager or managing body as required.

  • Participating in all long-range planning meetings.

Construction, renovation and/or reconstruction of such properties, whether performed by maintenance staff or outside contractors.

  • Prepares the annual budget for the maintenance and capital improvement of course properties. The Director of Agronomy formulates the annual maintenance and capital budgets to implement board policies established in accordance with the long-range plan and defined maintenance standards.

  • Interviews, hires, trains and supervises a staff of employees for the purpose of maintaining the properties. The Director of Agronomy has authority to terminate employment of subordinates.

  • Plans all maintenance and project work, applying his or her agronomic and administrative expertise to achieve the agreed-upon maintenance standards and long-range goals.

  • Oversee the scheduling and routing of personnel and equipment to accomplish the work. The Director of Agronomy frequently inspects the golf course and related areas to evaluate how well management standards are being achieved and to effect changes in management programs.

  • Acquires equipment and purchases necessary supplies to maintain the golf course and other properties. The Director of Agronomy is responsible for inventory control and oversees the equipment maintenance programs. The Director of Agronomy approves all expenditures and exercises cost control measures to keep, as nearly as possible, operating and capital expenses in line with the approved budgets.

  • Keeps accurate and complete records on payroll, inventory, weather data, maintenance procedures, pesticide applications, etc.

  • Communicates regularly with other members of the top management group to discuss activities, goals, plans and member/customer input.

  • Maintains clear understanding of and implements all agronomy standards in addition to ensuring compliance with all local, state and federal regulatory standards/laws

  • Stays abreast of current agronomic information and industry initiatives

  • Ensures proper mixing, calibration, and application of all chemical/fertilizers used on the course

  • Addresses directly all real or perceived environmental concerns 

  • Maintains ongoing awareness of all agronomic activity on the course and provides constant feedback and direction to key staff members. 

  • Ensures both upward and downward communication within the department and inter-departmentally

  • Provides leadership and a positive working environment that fosters teamwork, communication, ethical behavior, cleanliness and a “can do” attitude. 

  • Assures that effective orientation and training are given to each new associate. 

  • Develops ongoing training programs. 

  • Incorporates safe work practices in job performance. 

 REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 Associate’s degree (BA) preferably in Agronomy; and five to ten years of Director of Agronomy or Superintendent experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Advanced knowledge of agronomy and turfgrass management practices; a working knowledge of golf facility construction principles, practices and methods; and a thorough understanding of the rules and strategies of the game of golf.

A high degree of administrative and executive ability, especially in terms of problem solving and decision making.

Excellent oral and written communications skills.

Knowledge of current federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting the management of golf course operations (including, but not limited to, employment, safety and environmental standards, laws and regulations).

Participation in continuing education opportunities such as seminars, workshops, correspondence courses, field days and trade shows.

Related experience is required.

Must be able to pass a background check. 

Must be able to maintain professional status through interface with customers, management, and co-workers.  

Must be able to work flexible schedules, including but not limited to extended hours, irregular shifts, evenings, holidays, and/or weekends. Bachelor’s degree (BA) preferably in Agronomy; and five to ten years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Valid Driver’s License is required. 

Must have a State Pesticide Applicator License

Possesses expert level understanding of irrigation principles and management

2nd Assistant Golf Course Superintendent: Ledgestone Country Club

2nd Assistant Golf Course Superintendent:

Ledgestone Country Club is seeking a qualified individual to join our turf maintenance team as the 2nd Assistant Golf Course Superintendent.  Ledgestone is a semi-private club located in the booming Midwest golf hub of Branson Missouri.  A Tom Clark design, described by Golf Digest as a “Masterpiece of Mountain Golf Architecture” tucked away in the natural beauty of the Ozark Mountains.

This opportunity will be a great developmental position for the individual wanting to take the next step.  As a leadership position, but also a working position, the candidate will be involved behind the scenes as well, providing a foundation for the progression of their future to one day be a golf course superintendent. This position has a long history of candidates moving on into higher roles in the industry.

Work/Life balance is a high priority here at Ledgestone.  The candidate will work every third weekend March-October, with 3 weekends worked November-February.  Overtime will be available but limited to critical irrigation repairs, aerification dates, and hot summer afternoons on a rotating schedule. Being located near numerous lakes, rivers, and mountains, the Branson area provides ample opportunities for the outdoors enthusiast.

Education & Experience

Position Qualifications:

Required: Bachelor's in Turf science, Horticulture or other plant science field

Two years’ of related experience. Knowledge of turfgrass and landscape research protocols, objectives, and equipment operation. Proficient in the use of data collection tools including digital cameras and light boxes, NDVI meters is preferred but not required. Ability to work outdoors during hot or cold climate weather conditions. Ability to maintain and repair hoop house structure, as needed.

Oklahoma pesticide applicator in categories 3a and/or 10 and the FAA remote pilot certificate or ability to obtain both within 90 days of hire. Valid Driver’s license.

Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Knowledge in computer, telephone, copier, audiovisual, power tools & hand tools. Proficient in MS word, excel, and PowerPoint. Public speaking ability. Writing ability.

Preferred: Master's in Turf science, Horticulture or other plant science field with 3-4 years experience which includes: competent in computer word processing, statistical analysis, spreadsheets, and presentation software.
